Ironic Monk Mug |
|
This wonderful vintage item is attributed to the Limoges Region of France. The technique used on this mug looks, to me, like mixtion a combination of transfer and hand painting. The portrait is of a monk musing over something he sees in a newspaper. The ironic part is that the newspaper that the monk is reading has the title: “JOURNAL ENATHE” , which could be translated from French to read, Journal of Atheists; and if you look closely you will see that there are pictures of scantily clad Victorian woman on the front. The mark on the bottom reads: LWL. The mug is in good condition, there are no chips, but it has one hairline that shows inside, but not out. One minute one is also on the rim of the bottom. It has some stains on the inside (shown in picture). There are a few small scratches and overall crazing, which is to be expected on an old glazed ceramic piece. This would make a great display and conversation piece. |
