Vintage Boots Nottingham Brass/Iron Scale & Weights (England) |
|
This lovely scale & weights was imported from England. The base looks like it was forged from iron and painted black. The fixtures and the bowl are brass or plate. It is marked: Boots/ Nottingham on the portion where you would place the weights. I can picture this scale being used in the old market place there; measuring food items sold. I have attached a web address that has information on the city of its origin, if you are interested: http://www.stpetersnottingham.org/history/city.htm.
The scale includes six brass weights: 8 oz, 100g, 50g, 1oz, ½ oz and 5g. The gram weights are engraved with the name Debbie, I believe the engraving was done later, as it is very light. The oz. weights are not engraved. I don’t know whether the weights or a portion of them are the original ones or not. On the bottom of the largest weight (8 oz) impressed on the bottom is a crown with the numbers 369 & 86. I believe this scale to be early 1900’s and since the bottom of the scale has hand written letters and numbers in paint: BD13 2HB 29. This item could be c. 1929. That is my guess, but please view the pictures and decide for yourself. It is in good condition, but has some chipped paint, rust here and there; on the bottom and in between the fixtures. The brass parts and the weights have some corrosion. If you wanted to use this vintage scale to weigh items, I am sure you would need to have it adjusted; but as a display piece it would be fantastic as it is. This piece has a lovely patina and would add English grace and charm to any kitchen or study. |
