Majolica Scottish Rogue Tobacco Humidor |
|
This little fellow is just so charming and life-like. This vintage Scottish Rogue is a really amazing character, his facial features seem almost human. He has light blue-gray eyes, rosy cheeks and reddish-brown lips, you can't help but smile when you see him. He has a blue jacket, brown beard and the lid of the humidor is a matching blue cap with a red pom- pom. On the bottom is a number ( 2547) and another mark that I can not make out hand engraved. Most humidors similar to this one were made in either England or the Continent (Central Europe: France, Austria, Germany, etc...) between approximately 1890 - 1920. I found the exact style Scottish Rogue (different colors and 1" taller) on page 67 of "Majolica: British, American and European Wares" by Jeffrey B Snyder and Leslie Bockol. The caption reads: Humidor, unattributed, a Scottish rogue, with removable cap. 7" high. Courtesy of Michael G. Strawser, Majolica Auctions. $375.00 plus. The dimensions are: 6" H, 4"W(bottom), 5"W (the cap), 4"D. He is in good condition, but there are some flaws: two small chips inside the rim (one is approximately 1/4", the other 1/8"), One small chip (shown in the pictures) on the rim of the head below the cap. On his right collar there is a small chip, showing gray. Last, on the cap there are several areas where glaze is missing ( which exposes gray underneath), the largest about 1 inch and the smallest about 1/4 inch (see pictures). Along the pom-pom in the front there is some glaze missing also. With these flaws aside, he is still a wonderful vintage tobacco humidor that would grace any home. |
