17th Century Brown Slag Beer Bottle Ascension Island

This 17th century bottle has some interesting provenance. Slag Beer Bottle History: The British were planning on imprisoning Napoleon on Ascension Island, so they established a garrison there in the early to mid 1800's. They changed their mind and sent him elsewhere, so the garrison was abandoned. During the 50's the US set up a radar tracing station there, a man dug up these bottles during his spare time. This bootle was obtained from him. They are called "slag" bottles; the slag is a waste product from the iron smelting operation (melted sand).
