Royal Winton Grimwades Chintz Salt & Pepper Set Roses

Description: You are viewing a very elegant & rare Royal Winton Grimwades salt & pepper shaker set with a lovely tray to display them.  This is a stunningly beautiful large pattern chintz that has white roses on a red lace pattern background and the tray has gold trim.  The set has a wonderful lustre glaze.  The shakers have cork stoppers.   In the reference Chintz Ceramics, a set similar to this one is valued at $150.00 to $200.00.  This vintage set would be a great useful and collectable one to compliment other red and white transfer ware.  It is marked with the Royal Winton / Grimwades / England green under glaze mark that was used between 1934 and 1950.  One of the shakers is marked England.

Royal Winton History: The company was founded in 1885 as Grimwades Bros. in Stoke on Trent, England.  Winton Pottery was built in 1892.  The Royal was added as a prefix in 1930 following the royal patronage of King George the V and Queen Mary.  They were well renowned for there lithographed Chintz wares.

In the 1960's Royal Winton stopped producing the chintz.  Managing director Peter Griffin said the reason being is that cost effectiveness took over at this point in time and they had to stop because chintz was too labor intensive to produce.  The company had to start making shapes and using decorations that could be mass produced to keep up with the competition.  So, the expression is true, " They just don't make things like they used to".  This is your chance to own a lovely vintage Royal Winton salt and pepper set that was produced in a time when quality not quantity mattered.  It is just a bid away.

Dimensions:  Approximately:   Tray 6 " L  2 1/3 " W , Shakers 2 1/2 " H

Condition: Good, one of the shakers has two flaws: 1/3" crack to the ceramic and 1/2 " circular crack to the glaze (this looks like it could have been a manufacturing flaw, when fired). Other than that there is no chips or cracks to the ceramic.  There is however ware to the gold on the rim and all over crazing, which is normal for vintage ceramics with glazes.

This is a elegant little vintage set imported from England.
